If you search Google for the phrase ‘What is Search Engine Optimization?’ there are approximately 325 million results. You could ask 100 Internet marketers what SEO is and they would probably all give you a different, long-winded answer.

My very simple answer to the question, what is SEO? is:

The stuff’ you do to get your website ranked (listed) higher up on the Search Engines. The higher up on the Search Engines you get your website, the more likely you will be to get people to visit your website.

As most people only look at the websites listed on page 1 of Google, your aim is to optimize your website for exactly that, 1st Page on Google.

SEO is a very effective way of getting traffic (visitors) to your website via Google, there are some basic principles you must follow in order to help Google find your site so that it can offer your site to its users (the people doing the searching).

By optimizing elements of your pages and by positioning your website in the correct way, you will receive higher rankings on Google. As your rankings on Google go up, the amount of traffic your website receives will also increase.

If you think about the way you use Google, you naturally start at the top and work your way down the page. If you do not see what you are looking for on page 1 you may search for another set of keywords (search term) or you may look on page 2. Very rarely do you look at pages 3, 4 or 5 or so on, unless you have been searching for a while and you have not found what you are looking for.

So, if your website is listed high up on the 1st Page of Google, it goes without saying that you are likely to receive the most clicks and visits to your website.

SEO is a very powerful online tool – you must use SEO to drive traffic to your site.

SEO is easier than you think and as your optimization starts to kick in you will notice that your website will start appearing higher up on Google, this will give you a confidence boost and you will realise that you can optimize your website yourself.

As you will discover the more competitive a keyword is, the more difficult it is going to be to beat other web pages who are also aiming for that 1st page position, but don’t let that put you off, I have hundreds of web pages that appear on the 1st Page of Google for very competitive keywords.
